Lithuanian Heritage Club is looking for a home, a brick and mortar type, where we could meet...
Aroung Dallas it would be good....because everyone knows where Dallas is...BUT...a home is what we need.
There is a building for sale in Sherman for 20k. Two story but needs a lot of work. So, we are asking you to put on your thinking caps and come up with some ideas...
This facility would be, at the same time, a Lithuanian Deli, Museum, coffee shop, meeting hall and library.
We want to hear from you people...
So send me a PM (private message) and lets get this project going. As John Wayne said "daylight is burning" so lets get to work.
Casey

The "SHRINE"
It was a claudy and overcast Sunday morning last December. Temperatures in the 50's and a forcast of rain. I should have just gone home, back to Dallas after spending "KUCIAS" the night before with the Lithuanian Community in San Antonio, but I didn't. I was on a personal mission, a quest to search, find and pay my respects...
My little Neon and I left San Antonio and headed east towards Stockdale on Rt.87. In Stockdale I turned south on 123. This gentle country road took me to a small Polish village of Cestohowa and the steeples of Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary founded in 1873. Down the road I came upon the oldest Polish village in Texas called Panna Maria and it's pride: Immaculate Conception Church dating back to 1855. I wish I had time to spend more time at both places, but it was beginning to rain and I had a mission to fullfil....
From Panna Maria I took Rt. 81 east to Rt 72 and Yorktown, Texas.
Rain turned to drizzle...
Yorktown, rich in history, proud of it's heritage and it's Lithuanian roots... In Yorktown I turned south on Rt. 119. I was almost there...

SHRINE.....post #12 con'd
"...I was almost there."
Several miles south on Rt.119 at the cross roads of Rt. 119 and Lee Alves Rd. on the SE corner stood an official Texas marker. It said that here is where the FIRST LITHUANIAN COLONIST CAME TO TEXAS AND SETTLED between 1852 and 1870.
Like many of you I have also heard and read that there was such a place.... but I had to see it for myself. I had to see not only the sign but also the SHRINE....the only monument build by and for Lithuanians....the JONISHKES cemetery.
Lee Alves is a dirt road that winds east through rolling country side. East I drove about 1/2 mile and there it was, on my right, the SHRINE, the cemetery.
An old wire fence, and old gate and a rusted metal sign: "JONISHKES LITHUANIAN CEMETERY".
On that overcast still day, with no one around, I walked among the aging monuments that marked the spot of each settlers journeys end.
My search was over, I met them...I said a prayer.
PS This God's little acre, our only Lithuanian monumet in Texas, is ravaged by time. Something should be done to maintain the property so those after us could visit. Let's form a dedicated restoration group and schedule regular visits to our little acre.

Last chance to vote in person for our candidates is:
.....This SUNDAY, May 13 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm @ HILLCREST BANK, 2811 McKinney, Uptown (Arts District) Dallas
This is the home of the Lithuanian School VARPELIS. If you never visited this would be a good time to do so. Just come as you are, no documents needed.
If you take the train, get off at St. Paul station. Walk 2 short block north on St. Paul street. There you board the free STREETCAR and ask the conductor to drop you off at Hillcrest Bank. There are several nice restaurants/saloons nearby (he-he) for those of you who want to make good time of it or celebrate MOM's DAY!!!
