My flights are set and I will make my first trip to Lithuania in September. Any suggestions or advice will be much appreciated. We are flying to Frankfort then to Vilinus. Hoping to meet up with "family" that I have never met. Paul

Hey, Im living now in Lithuania... and life is really bad. For example 1 liter(not galon) gas price is about 2$. Food expensive, our salaries is very low... Minimum salary is about 300$. Ofcourse here is a lot of of rich people. Also big corruption, bad government and so on... sad people...

In my opinion you better donate your travel money for any lithuanian comunity in usa.

If u have any questions u can ask Smile

Well, at least you are honest....Pessimists are those that just sit there and complain....Optimists do something about it.Glare

Optimists are emigrating now. Nowadays is huge emigration in Lithuania...

In 2010 emigrated ~85 000 people, and its only who declared his/her emigration, how many people come without declaration?

In 2011 emigration can be even bigger.

It's new emigration wave (emigracijos banga)...

We all started some place and my heart sends me to find out where my grandfather started his journey...life is difficult all over the world...understanding, communication and self determination has always helped me be the person that I am today. My grandparents were proud Lithuanian's and I need to wallk the ground where they walked...I never met them, they died before I was born, they lived a hard life, coal miners, but I'm told they never complained, were always happy and positive...I'm here because of them, so that's why I'm going...If anyone has any info on the village of BAUZAICIAI in the county of ERZVILKAS (Now Jurbarkas).

Paul,

Of all the books I have on Lithuanian towns and villages only two mentions Bauzaiciai:

1) Lietuviu Enciklopedija published 1954 in USA Vol II pp 293........It says that there is a large peat area there called "Bauzaiciu durpynas" or "Bauzaiciai moors". It covers an area of 162 hectars x 4 meters deep (about 420 acres x 11 feet deep). There is also a 500 acre swamp. Pine forests rule the area.

2) Musu Lietuva (Our Lithuania) published 1968 in USA Vol V pp 160.......It says that areas of note around city of Erzvilkas are the 204 hectar BAUZAICIU and 153 hectar MICKAICIU swamps about a mile apart of each other.

Lots of good stuff about city of Erzvilkas but the best is about the origin of the name: Erzvilkas.......The first Catholic Church was build there in 1584 near a castle hill (still there). But in the 1300-1400 centuries there WAS a castle on that hill that was attacked many times by the Teutonic Knights of the Cross and finaly taken.

After a day long battle the Knights dismounted, turned out their horses to graze and rested. Lithuanians saw their chance. They dressed a stallion in wolfs skins and released him among the Knights herd of horses.

Horses are deadly afraid of wolfs and a smell of a wolf drives them wild, and they did, with the Lithuanian stallion chasing mares in all directions....Needles to say the Knights were left horseless and eventually gave up.

This Lithuanian victory was remembered as the stallion/wolf battle. The saved town and castle were renamed the stallion/wolf castle and town.........You see:.....Stallion in lithuanian is ERZILAS and wolf is VILKAS = ERZVILKAS.

Have a nice trip and send us a post card.Cool

I know that some people really liked Ratonda hotel in Vilnius. The prices are not too high, and it's in the heart of the the city. We really liked it. You may not like the car alarms going off in the middle of the night though....Huh
Talking about car rentals, I'm not sure, but they used to have those right there at the airport. You need to consider that you may not want to drive yourself in Lithuania, because the way that people drive there is very different (no offence to anybody).

I can not compare German and Lithuanian driving, I don't know if it's much different or not. I know, that my husband said he was happy that he didn't need to drive in Vilnius. BigGrin It was too stressfull for him. In bigger cities you can find public transportation(buses, troleybuses, taxes). I don't know if you have any family or friends there who can drive you to see places? There is some public transportation (buses) to get to smaller towns, too.
