I just checked maps.yahoo for Azle, TX. I seems it's right close to Fort Worth. Oh yes, there are quite a few Lithuanians in Dallas/ Fort Worth area.

You have to order a minumum of 8 loaves of bread to have it shipped - the total including UPS shipping was ~$47.00 (it was $46.XX). It is worth every penny!!!

Since I failed to take pictures last year, here's my penance:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/chriscowan/sets/72157624138222869/

These pictures are of the San Antonio group at:

- TX Folklife Festival 6/2010
- Kucios 12/2010
- Independence Day 2/2011

I won't be able to make it down to Houston for pancakes this Sunday, but hope to meet you again, some time soon!

Well, I'm in two, since I was taking these.

Right here, I'm the 2nd person from the left looking over the shoulder of the person in front of me.

Labas! My name is Dalia (Dainauskas) Hunter. I'm a first-gen Lithuanian American from the Chicago area. My folks both emigrated to the US when they were children during the war. Lithuanian food, culture, & language was pervasive at home. However, since I'm the youngest my parents (& truthfully myself too) didn't try as hard for me to learn the language. Crying
I moved to New Braunfels, TX about 5 years ago. My Dad still lives in Woodridge, IL, so whenever I visit we always stop at Smilga! Drool
I'd like to learn more about my past & hopefully even learn the language. I've been lucky enough to visit Lithuania twice. First was a family trip. It was very emotional because it was the first time my parents had set foot on Lithuanian soil in 60 years! The second trip was to support my sister (who worked at the US Embassy in Vilnius) with the birth of her son, Jonas. My dad's side of the family is Dainauskas and my mother's side is Elvikis.
I'm interested in meeting up with some fellow Lugans. I've inherited my mom's Lithuanian cookbook and potato grater. I found a website called Valgai.net (I think) that also sells imported foods. They have several types of rye bread & when you open the box it smells like home & heaven! Prices are also reasonable.
Hopefully there will be some more meetups in the San Antonio area since that is closest for me. BigGrin

Dalia,

You need to contact Venice Grantham, who runs the Lithuanians in Texas group that meets in San Antonio.
Her email is ven.grant@lavernia.net

The events are typically held at the Oblate Renewal Center, 5700 Blanco Rd, San Antonio, TX 78216

Here's a link to google maps showing the location
http://maps.google.com/m...id=13665944817825260998

We will be having our Kucios celebration on Sat 12/3/2011 - 2PM to 5PM
and celebrate Lithuanian Independence Day on Sat 2/18/2012 - 2PM to 5PM

Hope to see you there.

Wow, what a weekend !!!

Saturday San Antonio Lithuanians had their KUCIOS and I came down as a Dallas LAC rep. It was great !!! Met many nice people such as Cris, Joe, Sister Margaret and their fearless leader Venice. There was plenty to eat and drink, prizes were given away, the story of Nativity was read and Kucios tradition explained. We sang Christmas carols, broke and shared bread (plotkeles) and talked and talked and........

Sorry I can't remember everyones names...but you guys are the best. May the Big Guy bless you all..ThumbsUp

Kestutis (Casey)

PS Next day I drove down to Yorktown and visited the "JONISHKES" Lithuanian cemetery, the only one in Texas...but that's a story for another time...

PS2 Don't forget that Hustonites are holding their Kucios on the 11th of December. Support their effort by attending, it gets lonesome when just a few show up. So hitch your horse to the wagon and drive your family to the event....Hey, Kucios comes only once a year....
