Labas,

I am originally from Baltimore, MD and have been living in TX since 1993. Austin most of that time, but also San Antonio.

I am of 1/2 Lithuanian descent. All of my maternal great grandparents immigrated to the US between 1887 and 1903, and settled in Luzerne County, PA. Both of my maternal grandparents spoke the language, and I often kick myself for not learning more, while they were alive. I was exposed to many aspects of the Lithuanian culture growing up.

Presently, I participate in the Lithuanians in Texas group that meets in San Antonio. We had our annual Lithuanian Independence Day celebration yesterday, as a matter of fact. I'm interested in meeting other Lithuanians, and I am trying to learn the language. I anticipate taking a trip there within the next few years.

Well, Ceez,
Why don't you join Houston Lithuanians at our next gathering March 6, 1:30 PM, at Bellaire City Hall, 7008 S. Rice Avenue, Bellaire, Texas 77401.
It's going to be Independence Day Celebration + Uzgaveniu Blynu Balius (Lithuanian Mardi Gras potluck).
See you there.

I'm seriously considering it. I understand Venice Grantham and some other people from San Antonio, often are your functions.

But you live in Ms. Siga area and she's the local contact. Welcone welcomeThumbsUp

Lithuanian Bread sources (not as good as Bruno's): "LIETUVELE" on top/right of this page, they ship UPS or RACINE Bakery in Chicago, they also ship... www.racinebakery.com

Making Lithuanian Rye bread at home is rather tricky.
First you need to find some good rye flour (let's say Bob’s Red Mill), then make a sourdough starter (you can find plenty of tips about it online), which you can keep in the fridge and regularly feed with rye flour.
You also must remember that favorite Lithuanian rye bread is made with scalded dough.

Here are a couple of links:

http://books.google.com/...ded%20bread&f=false

And you want to save yourself lots of time you can go to one of the Russian stores in Houston that sell Lithuanian and Latvian bread.
Russian General Store - 9629 Hillcroft Avenue
Golden Grain - 5406 Birdwood Road
Lithuanian bread that they sell there unfortunately is rather inferior (and often stale). I prefer to buy Latvian bread.

I don't remember Baltic Bakery ... my grandparents attended St. George's church!!! My grandmother lived on 34th Place and Halstead so I'm quite familiar with the area! Did Bruno's go out of business? I would really love to get ahold of that bread! It was a staple in our house growing up in Michigan - we got extra for the freezer every time we went to see grandma - my sister's and I still make bacon buns!

Bacon buns!!! Jlbergin, you are ruining my diet plans.Woot

I think Bruno merged with Racine bakery on 18th street and then moved to Archer ave...not sure. Baltic bakery ended up on 71st and Talman and then I lost track of them.....Most everyone moved to Lemont

We had a cottage in Union Pier Michigan....Great memories.Sad

Bruno's is still on Lituanica!!! They will ship their bread, but they don't take credit cards - haven't called yet to see how we could work that out! The address is 3341 S. Lituanica Ave, Chicago, IL 60608 phone 773-254-6376... I will be calling them soon to see about possibly sending them a money order and having some of that bread shipped!BigGrin

I just called Bruno's - they will ship to Texas - they take MasterCard and Visa now BigGrin - there is an 8 loaf minimum @ $4 per loaf for the Lithuanian rye bread. They also charge the shipping. I placed my order today!!!! I know their bread freezes well so I am VERY excited to get this!!!! Unfortunately they don't ship bacon buns - I can understand why! OhMyGod

Still waiting for pictures from the San Antonio gathering from you or from Venice. If not pictures, then a "detailed" report....

Your invited:

Okey Mr. Ceez from Baltimore....No pictures of Sam Antonio gathering, that's okey. No story either, that's also okey......Ever go Dallas way?
You are invited for a beer in The Colony, Texas.....It's no palace but that is where I hang my hat. Give me a days warning and wife and I will whip up some KUGELIS to go with the beer.

May is not good (vacation) but othervise were home 24/7. We have Shiners and Sviturys in the ice box waiting.

My apologies, although I took a camera to both SA and Houston, I shamefully forgot to take any pictures.
I did get to meet Sigita and her family in Houston.
Would have posted sooner, but it's SxSW time here in Austin.

I'm not sure when I be back up near Dallas but will keep you in mind.

BTW, ceez is an alliteration of my initials C. C. And my first name is Chris
